Some of my favourite features of med 2 is the papacy and geopolitical game that’s played by every faction, knowing that you’re on a clock before the pope decides enough is enough is great not to mention the AI on the campaign map is a lot smarter than in Rome 1 (they AI in general got a massive buff from Rome 1) I think you must’ve of misused/didn’t understand the cav charges in Med 2, with a proper run up with lances down they can destroy a unit, the issues is basically every factions main infantry in the early games are spearmen and directly charging into spear men is a horrible idea, or maybe you were just playing factions with bad Cav Really I think the graphics are still great, the cutscenes don’t really but the map both campaign and battle still look great for what a 20 year old game I tried to take my nostalgia-goggles out for this tier list because if I didn't the bias would have been too strong. Medieval 1 and shogun 1 haven't aged well but at least I can appreciate the origins of the series."Why Empire is on C tier under Napoleon?" because after testing both Napoleon and Empire back to back, Napoleon is simply a better game and in terms of mods LME4 (ntw3 honourable mention for mp) is miles better than any Empire mods. Thrones of Britannia is pretty average and hasn't received any love from CA, one could say Attila suffers equally but Age of Charlemagne DLC is so good that in contrast, it shows that ToB had a much worse fate. Rome 1 is pretty outdated and has aged worse than medieval 2 but I still love it. Personally I don't care about Warhammer setting but I really like the rest of the game (my only complaint is that battles are too fast for my taste) and Three kingdoms is a great game but I don't like the mix of fantasy and history (I know you can play records but is a gimp version of romance), the UI and overall, Im not really that interested in the setting. Medieval 2 is in A tier because it lacks a lot of quality of life features and it doesn't run as well as newer titles even tho I goddamn love the game setting and its mods are top-notch it can't be in S tier with the already mentioned problems. Rome 2 and Shogun 2 in 2020 are the pinnacle of what I consider the best total wars games and FotS have the best gunpowder mechanics in the whole series. If it lacks one of those three pillars but still is objectively a great game it goes to A tier. First let me clear my choices for S tier, for a game to reach it, I need to like the time period, it has to be fully functional (what I mean about that is that it has to run smoothly in modern PCs, it has to have the quality of life features that one could expect from a modern game, plus good looking UI and decent mod support) and it has to have great gameplay. The last couple of weeks I have been playing every single total war game and this is my final list.Ī tier: Medieval 2 - Three kingdoms - Warhammer 1 and 2Ĭ tier: Empire - Rome - Thrones of BritanniaĪ couple of points about how I choose each game placement.
